Life goes by, and suddenly somebody is whisked away from this earth far too early, the timing "all wrong" - at least as we would perceive it. It is sometimes only at that tragic time that you realise just how much you loved the person and how much you will miss them. I was married to Janey, Nick's older sister who died in 2000, and I had the privilege of knowing and loving Nick as a great friend for 46 years, first meeting him when he was just 13 years old. Sadly, I last saw "Lad", as we called each other, at the funeral of his Mum Liz, a great lady who famously said that her other three children were brought up, but Nick was "dragged up"! Nick was "playful", of course, which is one of the many reasons why he and I got along so tremendously well, but I must say that he displayed flashes of brilliance - the chief amongst which was in marrying the lovely Fiona. I remember Nick's dad Bernard saying loudly, and on more than one occasion with deep puzzlement, "how did Nick get himself a girl like that?" I am very deeply saddened and shocked by Nick's death, but of course the main burden of the "seemingly impossible to bear" grief falls upon Fiona and Isabel and also upon Nick's brother Jonny and his sister Heather. I send all of them, as far as can be expressed by a tiny little tribute, very much love.
